• The cable pulls but nothing happens. The cable has either snapped, slipped off the pulley, or the connector at the damper lid has corroded through. Common after a few humid Virginia summers.
• The handle spins freely. The set screw on the handle assembly has backed out, or the cable drum inside the firebox has stripped. Easy fix, but only if caught early.
• A metallic rattle when the wind blows. The damper plate isn’t seating fully. You’re hearing it chatter against the frame. This is more than annoying, it means the seal isn’t tight.
• Water stains on the firebox floor after rain. The damper isn’t closing completely and rain is getting down the flue. On a top-sealing damper, this usually means the gasket is shot or the lid is misaligned.
