Famco Chimney Cap & Crown Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Famco Chimney Cap & Crown in Newport News: What to Know First

We install and repair Famco chimney caps and crowns throughout Newport News as an independent Famco service provider, and most jobs are finished same-day once parts are in hand. Typical cap replacement runs $140 to $290 depending on the series, and crown coating starts around $300 for a standard single-flue. If you’re not sure what you have, call (757) 384-4719 and describe what’s up there; we’ll tell you whether it needs work before we ever schedule a truck.

This page is for Newport News homeowners with a Famco cap or crown that’s rusting, leaking, loose, or missing. We’re Top Hat Chimney, Wendell Pike’s crew, been running chimneys here since 1999. If it doesn’t need doing, we’ll tell you that too.

How Famco Products Fail - and How We Fix Them

Famco makes a solid product. But Newport News weather does things to metal that a showroom can’t simulate. Here’s what we actually see on roofs around here:

  • Famco SC series single-flue caps with wind-bent mesh. The stainless mesh on the SC series is fine, but nor’easters off the James River push it inward over time. Rain gets past, then birds. We straighten what’s salvageable, but usually replace the cap and step up to the heavier FC series. Cheaper than re-screening a chimney that keeps letting starlings in.
  • Famco FC series multi-flue caps on older Hilton Village chimneys. The mounting brackets on the FC series work well on clean masonry, but on 80-year-old brick with soft mortar, the screws back out. We see these leaning by the second season. Fix is a proper masonry anchor set and re-mortared footing, not just cranking the old screws tighter.
  • Surface rust on the Famco Legend series. The Legend is a galvanized line, and galvanized does fine until salt air finds a scratch. Newport News is close enough to the bay that we see rust blooming around the damper hardware first. We’ll coat it if the structure’s sound; if the rust has pitted through, a crown repair won’t save it. Replace the cap, and we’ll tell you how many years that Legend gave you before it quit.
  • Crown cracks from Famco caps installed without a proper crown setback. This one isn’t Famco’s fault. A cap bolted too close to the edge of the crown creates a stress point when the crown freezes and thaws. We see hairline cracks radiating from the bracket holes on corners. The fix is crown repair or coating after we re-set the cap with correct clearance.
  • Aftermarket “Famco-compatible” bases that don’t seal. A lot of Newport News homes got caps from a handyman or a big-box store that claimed to fit a Famco base. The flue opening on a true Famco cap is machined to a tight tolerance. Off-brand bases sit loose, so you get water running down the outside of the flue tile. We only use Famco OEM parts on Famco bases, or a properly fitted replacement with a new mounting system. Mixing systems is how you end up with a leak that takes two seasons to find.

Our Famco Chimney Cap & Crown Process

Here’s how a Famco cap or crown job goes from your phone call to the check we both sign:

  1. 1
You call (757) 384-4719. Wendell or someone on his crew answers. We ask what the cap looks like, how old it is, and what you’ve seen: water in the firebox, rust stains on the brick, birds in the flue.
  2. 2
We get eyes on the crown. Ladder, roof inspection, no trip charge inside the county. We look at the cap, the crown, the flue tile, and the top few courses of brick.
  3. 3
We show you the evidence. If something’s actually wrong, you’ll get camera footage or photos. If nothing’s wrong, that’s the visit. We don’t invent work.
  4. 4
Parts decision made with you. Famco OEM where it matters, quality aftermarket only where it doesn’t, and we explain the difference before we order anything.
  5. 5
The repair. Cap off, crown prepped, coated or patched, new cap set and sealed. No mess left on the roof. No surprise line items.
  6. 6
The 90-Day Done Right Promise, in writing. If the cap shifts or the crown leaks within 90 days, one call brings us back at no charge.

What Famco Chimney Cap & Crown Costs in Newport News

Why Newport News Homeowners Call Top Hat Chimney for Famco Work

Plenty of companies will sell you a chimney cap. Not many will tell you the one you have just needs a coat of rust treatment and two more years. Wendell Pike started Top Hat Chimney in 1999, and he’s run crews through Newport News long enough to know the older chimneys in Hilton Village, the track homes out by Kiln Creek, and the salt-air trouble along the bay side. You ask anyone on your street, and they’ll tell you the same thing: he shows up when he says, names a price before the work starts, and stands behind it for 90 days in writing. We carry Famco OEM parts, and we also service and install DuraFlex, HeatShield, and Gelco when a liner or a repair calls for it. One call, (757) 384-4719, and a live person answers, any hour.
