A Top company - serving Newport News, VA

DuraFlex Fireplace Services Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

How DuraFlex Products Fail - and How We Fix Them

DuraFlex makes solid liner and venting products. But every brand has its failure patterns, and around Newport News we see the same handful repeat. Here’s what actually goes wrong and what we do about it.

  • DuraFlex 316L liners in wood-burning fireplaces: The thin-wall 316L alloy handles heat well, but in older Newport News homes near Hilton Village where chimneys run exterior walls, we regularly see pitting and pinholes from years of condensation cycling. Tidewater humidity plus a cold exterior chimney equals moisture sitting against that liner. Fix: camera inspection first, then a HeatShield resurfacing or a liner replacement depending on what the footage shows. We don’t recommend a new liner until we can show you the hole on camera.
  • DuraFlex Pro connectors pulling loose at the appliance collar: On gas inserts and wood stoves, the connector section at the appliance is the most common leak point. Thermal expansion and contraction over thousands of burn cycles loosens the connection. Symptoms are soot streaks near the top of the unit or a faint smoke smell in the room on startup. Fix: reseal and reconnect at the collar, then pressure-test the run.
  • DuraFlex aluminum liners in gas fireplaces pitting from condensate: Aluminum is fine for gas exhaust, but Newport News gas fireplaces that get used heavily in damp winters produce acidic condensate. We’ve pulled aluminum liners with dime-sized perforations halfway up the chimney. Homeowners often never notice until a carbon monoxide detector goes off. Fix: evaluate whether a 316L upgrade makes sense given how the fireplace is used.
  • DuraFlex rain caps and terminations rusting at the fasteners: Salt air is real in Newport News, even a few miles inland. The stainless cap body holds up, but cheaper galvanized fasteners and screen edges go first. We see this on homes from Denbigh to Riverside. Fix: replace terminations with all-stainless components, not just a new cap.
  • Improper prior installation (this is the big one): A surprising number of DuraFlex failures we see in Newport News weren’t the product’s fault. They were a rushed install. Sections not fully seated, screws where screws don’t belong, insulation omitted where code requires it. We find these during our camera inspection. Fix: correct the install, document everything, and stand behind the repair with our 90-Day Done Right Promise.

Our DuraFlex Fireplace Services Process

Every DuraFlex job follows the same steps. No shortcuts, no mystery.

  1. 1
You call (757) 384-4719. A live person answers. We ask about your fireplace, the age of the system, and any symptoms you’re noticing. You get a real arrival window before we hang up.
  2. 2
We arrive and run a camera through the flue. Before any tool comes off the truck, we inspect. You see the footage. We point at the screen and explain what we’re looking at in plain English.
  3. 3
Parts decision. If it’s a DuraFlex component, we prefer OEM where it matters for the warranty. Where OEM isn’t necessary (caps, flashing, minor connectors), we’ll use quality aftermarket and tell you the difference in cost and trade-off. You always get to choose.
  4. 4
The repair. Wendell or one of his background-checked crew members does the work. Uniform, shoe covers, drop cloths. The price we quoted before starting is the price on the invoice.
  5. 5
Test and document. After the repair, we run the fireplace and verify draft. You get the camera footage and a plain-English verdict on everything we saw, whether we touched it or not.
  6. 6
90-Day Done Right Promise. If anything isn’t right, one phone call brings us back at no charge. It’s in writing on every single job.

Why Newport News Homeowners Call Top Hat Chimney for DuraFlex Work

We’ve been servicing fireplaces in Newport News since 1999. That’s over 29 years of running chimney trucks through the same streets. We know the homes near Hilton Village with the original brick from the 1920s. We know the 1980s ranchers in Denbigh with prefab fireplaces. We know the newer construction in Kiln Creek. The company is owned and operated by Wendell Pike, and his name is on the license and on the work. He’ll run into you at the hardware store on Saturday, so he has every reason to do the job right the first time.

We service DuraFlex, and we’re also certified on HeatShield and Gelco systems. If a heat shield or a gel-coat repair is the better call for your fireplace, we’ll say so. The camera footage and a plain-English verdict, every time, no exceptions. And every job carries our 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing.

As an independent DuraFlex service provider, we’re not a warranty station and we don’t pretend to be. But we know these products well enough to tell you when a repair makes sense and when replacement is honest advice.
