• Rust stains or a new musty smell in the firebox after rain. Water coming down the flue from a failed crown will humidify the whole firebox. In a sealed factory-built unit, that moisture has nowhere to go and starts rusting the metal firebox corners.

DIY or Call Us?

I’ll be honest about what you can do yourself and what you shouldn’t. Checking a crown is safe if you can get eyes on it from a ladder that’s properly set on level ground. You can photograph cracks, measure the overhang, and look for missing chunks. That’s worth doing once a year because early cracks are a $200 reseal, not a $700 rebuild.

What we don’t recommend is tackling the actual crown repair yourself. This is roofing-grade work at height, usually 20 to 30 feet up, and if you slip or the ladder shifts you’re in real trouble.
